2/19/21 Mise en Scene 5 Essential Elements

  1. Setting: it is the physical space that is projected in a story, scene, movie, etc... The location and time period are included in a setting. It allows the audience to understand when and where something is happening creating visual images. An example would be how Moana took place on an island and at sea.

  2. Decor: the scenic decoration that is formed to helps describe a character’s personality or lifestyle.

  3. Lighting: this is added to brighten or darken a scene creating a certain mood. For example, in horror movies the lighting is usually darkened making a specific part more intense.

  4. Depth of Space: this is determined by the length between certain people, scenery, and objects. These all take into consideration of the camera placement and their placement.

  5. Costumes and Makeup: both costumes and makeup form an actor into their character. For example, in the movie Greece everyone is dressed in a 50’s type of style to resemble what time period the movie took place.
