Updated: Apr 28, 2021

Exercise: Look at a magazine cover. What can you tell about the type of magazine it is; what kinds of articles it contains; who is likely to read it? Why?

By the magazine cover I can tell that it’s informative about different foods. You can conclude that the articles are recipes on all kinds of food. Chefs or people who are interested in cooking are most likely going to be the ones who read it because it has to do with food and recipes.

· The visual elements, such as figure, costume, color, pose, typography. Layout. Very colorful with a big picture of a homemade dish.

· Linguistic elements – the title, lexicon, use of ‘teasers’. Some teasers are “Easiest-ever weekday meats” and “10 ways to stretch your food budget”

· Lifestyle – what kind of lifestyle is ‘on offer’? How is it offered? They are offering a lifestyle of a quick and easy way to prepare meals.

· Representation – how are people and places constructed and presented through these technical elements? They are presented big and bold to attract readers to purchase the magazine.

· Mode of address – how is a audience being addressed by these elements? How is a potential reader encouraged to see her/himself as the addressee? The audience is being addressed with pictures and little pieces of information that interest readers. He/she is encouraged to be seen as interested and wanting to read/buy the magazine.

· Rhetoric – what is the potential reader being persuaded to buy/accept? The potential reader is being persuaded to buy certain ingredients to make the meals shown in the magazine.
